One of the biggest challenges for independent media organisations is finding a publishing system that can deliver to all print, broadcast and digital platforms; the cost for those not tied to big business or political interests is prohibitive. Superdesk is an open source newsroom tool that ensures media organisations are free to define their own type of newsroom organisation, content delivery and business strategy. It has been built by journalists, for journalists, with the aim of helping the media business towards financial sustainability.

Superdesk will also be the most challenging component of Lateral Cognitions web project infrastructure to install and configure. While Airtime, Newscoop and Booktype cover individual types of media production, superdesk places them all under the roof of a single architecture. Within superdesk, the flow of incoming information is guided and the workflow of media production shaped. Superdesk will be the last component of Lateral Cognition's infrastructure to be installed and will not be implemented until desired workflows in the individual media projects have become clear.
